The Kitchen as a Space for Display

Typology
Kitchen / Residential
Context
Greenside Design Center

A kitchen that treats storage as a medium for display, arranged around a rotating island so the room moves rather than the person in it.

The counter run, with storage read as display
The rotating island in plan and elevation
Integrated seating extracted from the island
Construction detail of the joinery and work surface

Narrative

The design maximises beauty and minimises chaos. It subverts the expectation of storage by asking why storage cannot also be display — the kitchen read as an exhibition of personal objects, so that only what is necessary and beautiful is kept.

The seating area is integrated into the counter, refusing the idea that every task in a home needs its own designated zone.

Resolved to construction-plan level: MDF and chipboard in a skimmed cement finish, a bamboo work surface, a brushed steel stool.

Key decisions

  • A rotating island: the user stays in place while what they need swivels toward them
  • Chairs that extract from the island and pair with a pull-out work surface
  • Open storage as the organising logic

Scope and services

  • Concept
  • space planning
  • joinery detailing and technical documentation
